Scholarship Workshop
May 3, 2018 – On Thursday, May 3, 2018, the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter hosted a Scholarship Workshop for its scholarship applicants at American National University Salem Campus.
The workshop included a discussion forum that included two guest panelist,James Cabiness, and Erica Anderson. Discussion topics focused on advice and tips for first-year success in college. The event was chaired by Emanuel Arnold.
Spring Scholarship Dance
May 5, 2018 – The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter held its annual Spring Scholarship Dance at the Holiday Inn Valley View. Approximately 100 people attended the event, which was chaired by Al Elliott.
Roanoke Kappa Relays
April 12, 2018 – The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter hosted its annual Kappa Relays city-wide middle school track meet. The event recognizes both outstanding athletes and athletes with outstanding academic performance. Both the Lucy Addison Middle School Boys & Girls Track Teams won 1st place at this year’s track meet!

The Roanoke Kappa Foundation Scholarship was established for the purpose of providing financial assistance to graduating African American high school students in the greater Roanoke Valley area who desire advanced education. We provide two (2) $1000 college scholarships to qualified high school seniors demonstrating academic achievement, leadership potential, service, and participation in activities both in and out of school. These scholarships are independent of any other assistance you may receive to attend college. Application packets are due by April 26, 2018. Applications postmarked after the deadline will NOT be considered.

2017 CIAA Football Championship Education Day

Inviting all high school and community college students! Join the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) for its Education Day event on November 10, 2017 at Salem Civic Center in Salem, Virginia! The CIAA Education Day goal is to provide high school juniors and seniors with an engaging introductory to the CIAA, its member institutions, culture, and collegiate athletics and academics.
20th Annual Spring Scholarship Ball
The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter hosted its 20th annual Spring Scholarship Ball on May 13, 2017 from 6:30 PM – 12 AM at the Holiday Inn Valley View Hotel. The event featured a dinner/dance format. Guests enjoyed a delicious plated dinner, a complimentary drink from the cash bar, and an evening of dancing as the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter raised funds for their annual college scholarship awards.

Mayo and Anderson Awarded Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Scholarships
The Roanoke Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. recently awarded Garrison Mayo of Lord Botetourt High School, and Erica Anderson of William Byrd High School $1,000 college scholarships for their post secondary education. The Roanoke Alumni Chapter awards scholarships to college-bound high school seniors on a competitive basis of academic excellence, personal achievement and awards, community involvement, and recommendations.
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. was founded Jan. 5, 1911, at Indiana University in Bloomington. Undergraduate chapters have been chartered on college campuses nationwide and alumni chapters in cities internationally. The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter was chartered in 1950, and serves the communities of the Greater Roanoke Valley.

2017 Kappa Relays Track Meet
The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity had its annual Kappa Relays Track Meet on Wednesday, March 29, 2017. The Kappa Relays is a city-wide middle school track meet that awards athletes for their athletic and academic success. Coach Sherley Stuart and the late Coach Rudy Dillard helped start this event in the 1980s.
Participants from Roanoke City middle school track teams included Breckinridge Middle School, James Madison Middle School, Lucy Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and Jackson Middle School. Student athletes competed in the following events:
- long jump (1st Place Females: Wilson / 1st Place Males: Breckinridge)
- triple jump (1st Place Females: Madison / 1st Place Males: Madison)
- shot put (1st Place Females: Breckinridge / 1st Place Males: Madison)
- 4 x 100 M Relay (1st Place Females: Madison / 1st Place Males: Breckinridge)
- 4 x 200 M Relay (1st Place Females: Madison / 1st Place Males: Madison)
- 4 x 400 M Relay (1st Place Females: Breckinridge / 1st Place Males: Breckinridge)
- 4 x 800 M Relay (1st Place Females: Breckinridge / 1st Place Males: Madison)
- 1600 Distance Sprint Medley (1st Place Females: Madison / 1st Place Males: Madison)
- Overall 1st Place Females: Madison / Overall 1st Place Males: Madison
The overall team winners for the boy’s and girl’s team was James Madison Middle School. In addition to track and field events, male and female athletes from each team were recognized for their outstanding academic achievements. Chapter member Tommy Bowles coordinated this event for the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter. Our event photographer was Jourdan Baxley.
Rescue Mission Volunteer Project
The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter volunteered at the Rescue Mission’s 2nd Helpings Thrift store on Saturday, March 18th. The brothers in attendance helped with sorting and tagging inventory for the thrift store, whose proceeds support the Rescue Mission’s services of comprehensive care for people in crisis. The Rescue Mission is the largest provider of emergency shelter in Roanoke. Its components include a health care center, male recovery program, family and female shelter, and transient male shelter. The Roanoke Kappas Present: “Once Upon a Dream” Dinner Dance
On Saturday, May 13, 2017, the Roanoke Kappa Foundation is hosting its Spring Scholarship Dinner Dance: “Once Upon a Dream” at the Holiday Inn Valley View from 6:30 pm – 12:00 am. Ticket holders will enjoy a plated dinner, a complimentary drink from the cash bar, as well as an evening of dancing to the musical selections of BAD1 Productions (DJ Jerome). The cost of the dinner dance is $40 per ticket, and attire is semi-formal. This annual event is the primary fundraiser for the college scholarships awarded by the Roanoke Kappa Foundation. On December 11, 2016, the Westside Elementary School Step Team, which is sponsored by and coached by the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter, performed a step show for a local holiday gathering for dialysis patients. Well over 100 people were in attendance. The step team did an excellent job and was well-received!
Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter Volunteers at the Community Christmas Store
On December 7, 2016, the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter volunteered at the Community Christmas Store in Roanoke, Virginia. Brothers in attendance helped sort through donations and setup the venue for a two-day event that assists over 490 families in need in a dignified manner during the holiday season.
Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter Donates Meals For Five Local Families
On November 20, 2016, the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter donated Thanksgiving baskets to feed five families in the local area. Brothers Rick Smith , Brandon Keith , and Brian Armstrong Jr. coordinated the project and helped make the initiative a huge success.
The Westside Steppers Participate in Homecoming Parade
On October 21, 2016, the Westside Elementary School Step Team participated and stepped in the William Fleming High School Homecoming Parade. The Westside Steppers are coached by Emanuel Arnold, and sponsored by the Roanoke Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where Arnold currently serves as chapter president.

Chapter Participates in Voter Registration Drive
Partnership with Westside Elementary School Step Team
The Roanoke Kappas are excited to announce our partnership with the Westside Elementary School Step Team. The co-ed step team consist of 15 fifth grade students. The team will be coached by Emanuel Arnold, who currently serves as the chapter president of the Roanoke Kappas. The chapter will work with Sherri and Stevie Ambrose, both school faculty members and coordinators for the Westside Step Team, to provided assistance and support for the team.
