Recap: 2016 Kappa Relays

The Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity had its 33rd Annual Kappa Relays Track Meet on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. The Kappa Relays is a city-wide middle school track meet that awards athletes for their athletic and academic success. Coach Sherley Stuart helped start this event at William Fleming High School on a gravel track in 1983.

Participants from Roanoke City middle school track teams included Breckinridge Middle School, James Madison Middle School, Lucy Addison Aerospace Magnet Middle School, Woodrow Wilson Middle School, and Jackson Middle School. Chapter member Tommy Bowles organized this event for the Roanoke Alumni Chapter.

Food Donations Sent to Tornado Victims

On Saturday, March 12, 2016, the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter worked with local volunteers to donate nonperishable items including canned goods and water to victims of a reported tornado that hit the town of Waverly, Virginia on February 24, 2016. The storm system killed three people and caused significant damage to the area. The Eastern Province Social Action Chairman, Edward Thomas organized the effort and charged each chapter in the Eastern Province to assist. Brother Fred McKenzie coordinated this initiative for the chapter.

2016 Roanoke Kappa Foundation Scholarship Application

Eligibility/Criteria

To eligible for a Roanoke Kappa Foundation $1000 scholarship an applicant must:

  1. Be a graduating high school senior in the greater Roanoke Valley or New River Valley.
  2. The applicant must have an overall GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4-point grading scale.
  3. The applicant must be planning to enroll in a full-time course of study, 12-15 semester hours at an accredited college or university in the United States.
  4. Exhibit leadership and a dedication to community service
  5. Be a United States citizen
  6. Applicant must not possess a degree from a 2 or 4 year college when applying for this scholarship
  7. The applicant must reside in one of the following areas to be eligible: Roanoke Valley, New River Valley.

Scholarship Checklist

  • Copy of College Acceptance Letter(s)
  • Official high school transcript in a sealed envelope
  • Application form
  • A current photo to be used in our printed awards program (if applicant is awarded a scholarship)
  • Typed essay 600-1000 words: “Describe your most meaningful achievements and how they relate to your future goals.
  • A typed list of your extra-curricular activities, achievement and awards, and community involvement.
  • 2 typed letters of recommendation
    • A high school teacher of your choice (person must not be related to you)
    • A mentor, coach, pastor or another person of your choosing (person must not be related to you)
  • Mail your complete application package to:

Elmwood Park Clean-Up

On Saturday, March 5, 2016, the Roanoke (VA) Alumni Chapter teamed up with local volunteers to clean up Roanoke’s Elmwood Park. Southwest Virginia’s premier concert and festival venue, Elmwood Park is located in downtown Roanoke and was recently renovated to include a 4,000+ capacity amphitheater. Chapter member Emanuel Arnold organized the activity.

It was a great day to help keep Elmwood Park beautiful and litter free!

The 2016 Annual Stuart/Dillard Kappa Relays

The Roanoke Alumni chapter will host its annual Kappa Relays on March 23, 2016 at William Fleming High School. The Kappa Relays is a city-wide middle school track meet that recognizes the athletic and academic performances of its participants. 3/12/16 @1-5pm Youth Symposium/ Mwanimugimu Essay Contest: Hollins Branch Library,  Roanoke; Event is created as part of the sorority initiative to get children 12-18 interested in Mathematics and Engineering as well as incorporating healthy eating and exercise.
